THE NORTHERN YOUTH PRESENTS "ONE NIGHT ONLY"
On the night of Tuesday 19th February, we hosted our first and only clubnight – “ONE NIGHT ONLY”. We celebrated the success of our pop up shop, hosted the previous Saturday, with a post-internet, highly-energised nostalgia attack in the depths of Mansion Underground.
Raising £700 for The Northern Youth Fund, we celebrated the ironic new sincerity of the internet and its social effects on nightlife and club culture. We brought the high-functioning fun of 90s and 2000s pop culture and pumped some sincere satire on to the dancefloor.
Our creative team designed a projection-based space: a video live-stream of the dance-floor which was projected adjacently to create some acute distorted reality, was joined by a video projection designed and created by our videographer (Alex Gordon) which merged and montaged nostalgic internet videogame graphic imagery. A tin-foil digital reality filled with reflective CDs hanging around the dancefloor made for a some World Wide Wow.
Whilst hosting a fun tongue-in-cheek take on university alt-club culture, we were able to create a clubnight that was entirely in support of our mental health and arts education fund which remains to be a significant issue at the heart of both The University of York and York St. John student consciousness. So, for that, we want to thank everyone who bought tickets and came down to the event, it’s invaluably appreciated. We also want to thank our DJs: Joe Rhys, Oren and Nivalis who curated fantastic sets to keep us going all night and for being so supportive in our commitment to celebrating artistic, in this case musical, talent in York.
