The Northern Youth presents "ONE DAY ONLY"
thank you to our collaborators
On Saturday 16th February, we hosted the second instalment of our pop up shop series “ONE DAY ONLY” which, this year, celebrated online clothing brands, businesses and visual artists and gave them a physical space outside of London. Our creative team designed a space with a post-internet aesthetic, including physical pop-up browsers, photobooths and a gaming space which was surrounded by the versatile 23-brand range to shop.
Over the day, we turned over £2,500 a considerable chunk of which has been donated to The Northern Youth Fund which supports two wonderful services working within mental health improvement and arts education services in the UK. Thank you to all of the brands that were involved, it made such a difference to the sustainability and significance of our fundraising goal and our commitment to continue improving and re-defining artistic events work in the North.
The event was covered by BBC Radio York with our Director (Dana Gamble) and Creative Director (John James) talking through our events programme so far this year, the motivation and lead-up to the pop up shop and our plans for the rest of the year.
We also had photo and film coverage from online platforms and will have write-ups published online shortly which will be shared here.
The Northern Youth's post-internet shop celebrated online retailers and the platforms they use. Social media enhances the climate for creative work and business and, subsequently, helps to shape an equalising plateau to the foundation of the (loosely-termed) 'creative industry'. We celebrated this modern liberation at SPARK:YORK with our post-internet pop up shop to draw attention to this freedom for small businesses but by physically bringing together a community to share the work of these talented designers. We created a social space to enjoy, discuss and support the creativity in streetwear and clothing design by young artists in 2019, together in the North of England to quench the abundant creative interest and desire for more outside of London.
