THE NORTHERN YOUTH is a sustainable platform which showcases young creative talent and projects in the North of England.
We are passionate about bringing together and celebrating artistic enthusiasm from the UK and showcasing it outside of the paradigm of
London creative culture. Our aim is to showcase, promote and illuminate creative work:
from artists to designers, from poets to musicians.
Our work is structured across three operative platforms:
02. EDITORIAL AND VISUAL CONTENT
03. E-COMMERCE PLATFORM
01. EVENTS PROGRAMMES
The Northern Youth began as an arts events organisation in York. Our first event took place in January 2016, hosting a 1,000-capacity fashion show
that pooled together the work of 50+ aspiring Northern designers. Preceded by a live Q&A with Anna Wintour (US Vogue) and Katharine Viner (Editor in Chief of
The Guardian), the show raised £30,000 in aid of Xavier Project and Refugee Action York - two charities helping rehabilitate refugees both locally and in North Africa.
The event was sponsored by Guardian Members, Bobbi Brown, Joseph Rowntree, Grand Central, House of Fraser and Yorkshire Living to name a few.
We then expanded in the years following to collate annual events programmes that include work from a multitude of disciplines.
Exploring performance art, an evening of spoken-word poetry developed into our Slay on Words series: a slam poetry celebration to highlight writing
and performance talent. We then expanded in the direction of performance work, to host “SECRET SETS” which saw poetry, stand-up comedy and
live music celebrated in underground York.
Our first art exhibition was held in collaboration with Illuminating York at York Minster and showcased the work of Northern artists and sculptors in
alignment with the innovative artistic uses of light inside the historic site.
We furthered our work to platform visual artists and created an exhibition series which explored the physical and cultural space
and environment that surrounds the expectations of events in the art world:
Unconventional Spaces saw its first instalment employing a student house to show immersive artwork.
To include the work of independent clothing brands and designers, we have hosted two pop-up events.
Both instalments of “ONE DAY ONLY” were a great success, the latter included 23 brands and was built around the aesthetics of a post-internet
shopping experience. We took online clothing designers and brands and gave them a physical space to promote, sell and exhibit their garments.
This was followed by our afterparty clubnight which created a high-energy, post-internet funk night to bask in the ironic parody of musical internet
produce since the dawn of the world wide web.
In 2018, we collaborated with art, fashion and culture magazine HARD to celebrate their first edition of the season with a party
which brought their written and visual content to a physicality.
02: EDITORIAL AND DIGITAL CONTENT
We curate, write and feature online editorials to platform and
showcase young creatives from or in the North of England.
We will be launching this strand of The Northern Youth very soon.
03: E-COMMERCE PLATFORM
The Northern Youth's e-commerce platform promotes artists and
designers through on our online, 10% of all sales will go to
The Northern Youth Fund to support mental health and
arts education services in the UK.
